ON my allotment in Crawley Down, there are about 1,000 two-year-old saplings. They originate from acorns planted at this time of year in 1999, intended for a millennium project but which could be used instead to commemorate the
Royal Jubilee.
Perhaps Queen Victoria's "V" on the Downs began with something like this, although I can't really see oaks growing on chalk. Perhaps if Sussex East or West County Council is already planning something similar, they would be interested?
However, if anyone can make use of them in any capacity, they are welcome and, of course, I'm not asking anything for them. I don't want to destroy them but will probably have to before too many years because they are growing on council-owned allotments. Call me on 01342 714337.
