A man appeared in court today charged with manslaughter, wounding and attempted robbery.

Unemployed tree surgeon Charles Wolfe, 28, is accused of trying to rob a sub post office off High Street, Billingshurst, on October 17.

During the alleged incident customer Graham Harper was stabbed.

Margaret Hopkins, 68, who was drawing her pension, was pushed to the ground, suffering six broken ribs.

Mrs Hopkins died a week later from a pulmonary embolism brought about by inactivity following the injuries.

Wolfe, of Bishops Lane, Henfield, was remanded in custody by Crawley Magistrates' Court.

He is due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Monday November 19.
