Cat owners on low incomes can get their pets neutered at the South-East's first mobile unit of its kind.

The £40,000 purpose-built clinic, which is run by the Horsham-based RSPCA, aims to give people on limited incomes a chance to get their pets neutered at a fraction of the normal cost.

Owners can simply bring their pets to the clinic between 8am and 9am, pay a £10 fee, then pick them up later.

The RSPCA commissioned the mobile clinic, which is to visit Brighton next month, after it found homes in the region were becoming overrun with cats because their owners had not had them neutered.

The charity estimates that for each non-neutered cat, as many as 50 million unwanted felines could eventually join the UK's already burgeoning cat population.

RSPCA South-East regional manager Richard McCrow said: "We are delighted our neutering clinic will be able to help control the cat population in the South-East."

The mobile clinic will be at the RSPCA centre in Braypool Lane, Patcham, Brighton, from November 5 to 8.
