A Royal Navy destroyer could be stationed off Brighton as security is stepped up for the Labour Party conference.

The ship, armed with surface-to-air missiles, could be called in if defence chiefs believe an attack on the Brighton Centre is likely.

As in previous years, a five-mile air exclusion zone will be in force around the venue during the conference from September 30 to October 4.

Internationals linking the Middle East and Far East fly over the skies above Brighton.

Sussex Police have confirmed the use of a destroyer as an option being considered.

A spokeswoman said: "Security for the conference is constantly being reviewed.

"While there are no plans at the moment to ask the Navy to send a destroyer, there is an option there for that to happen if it is considered necessary."

A spokesman for the Royal Navy said: "Security arrangements are a matter for Sussex Police and we would not discuss them.

"At the moment we have not received a request to provide additional facilities but the situation is constantly under review."

Sussex Police say security will be reviewed in the run-up to the conference.
