Littlehampton Town boss Andy Taylor wants Saturday's rousing Vase revival to kick start his season.

Town were two down at the half-time interval, but James Thorton's last-gasp equaliser took the second qualifying round match into extra-time. They went into the lead through 17-year-old striker Steve Davis before Peacehaven skipper Peter Durrant headed his second goal of a pulsating game to ensure a replay tomorrow night at Piddinghoe Avenue.

Taylor hopes the comeback will inspire an upturn in fortunes for his struggling team, who are only one point off the bottom of the Rich City League Division One.

He said: "To go in two down after we dominated the first half was a disaster. Five minutes of madness cost us. Even their manager admitted they were lucky.

"We came out in the second half and got the break we wanted. It was just the little bit of luck we needed because things have been going against us recently. We have drawn three games I felt we deserved to win and hopefully our season can take off now."

Peacehaven opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Gary Peters crossed from the left and Durrant's header slipped through the hands of Simon Davey.

The visitors doubled their lead four minutes later when Tom Pattenden tapped in after excellent work by Ashley Jones down the right.

Marigolds halved Peacehaven's lead a minute after the re-start when Sean Cooper headed past his own goalkeeper.

Town searched for the equaliser but had a let-off when a Pattenden shot hit the underside of the bar before substitute Thorton popped up to take the game into extra-time.

Littlehampton replacement Stuart Sell was unlucky to see his stunning volley cannon back off the bar in the 97th minute.

But minutes later Davis converted a cross to put his side in the lead for the first time.

The home side's joy was shortlived as Durrant nodded in another cross from Peters in the 100th minute.

Adam Griffith missed a glorious chance to win it for Peacehaven when he failed to get sufficient power onto a right-wing cross by Pattenden.

Peacehaven boss Peter Edwards admitted his side had probably wasted their best chance of progressing in the competition.

He said: "We have been playing better away from home this season. Once we were 2-0 up I thought we should have won, but we let them get back in it. Both their goals came from crosses we should have dealt with.

"Even at 2-2 we had some excellent chances. Leighton Allen and Tommy Pattenden had opportunities. We missed Jon Lockhart, who had the flu. I think he would have put some of them away."

Edwards was quick to praise captain Durrant, who scored his first two goals for the club since joining from Horsham YMCA in the summer. Edwards said: "He has been a good signing for us. Peter is big and strong and causes problems at set-pieces as he showed against Littlehampton."

The Peacehaven boss also explained why his team will be fired up for tomorrow's replay.

He said: "The FA Vase is fantastic. It gives us the chance to put the club on the map. A good run can lift our whole profile. We reached the quarter-finals five years ago and it's a good earner for us. It makes the players better as they start to come up against better opposition."

Littlehampton reached the semi-finals in 1991. Taylor said: "I can't see that happening again, although we will try. If anything, that can put a little more pressure on you."

Ringmer chairman Richard Soan admits boss Glen Geard has the club buzzing. The Blues won 5-0 at Pagham helped by a Shaun Grice hat-trick.

Geard's arrival has turned things round after a couple of tough years.

Soan said: "I have been chairman here for 11 or 12 years and that was the best football I have seen us play for a long time.

"The club is buzzing at the moment. Glen has turned it around but we must keep our feet on the ground."

Sean Randell and Glenn Davies were also on target.

Lancing produced a stunning comeback to beat Fleet in a five-goal Culver Road thriller having trailed 2-0 at the break. Glenn Soutter converted a penalty after Ryan Ford's shot against the bar had led to a scramble.

Ford struck twice in the last six minutes to complete the fairytale finale.
