One issue the Yes campaigners in Brighton and Hove refuse to talk about is exactly what they propose to pay a directly-elected mayor. It is important readers should be well aware of worrying evidence emerging from other parts of the country.

In Watford, the present council leader receives £10,200 a year but a directly-elected mayor would receive £50,000 a year. Nice work if you can get it. The London Borough of Lewisham pays its cabinet members £18,000 a year each and there is a campaign there to have a directly-elected mayor.

Do we really want this gravy train to start rolling in the City of Brighton and Hove? Am I alone in thinking we should be using its resources for the benefit of its citizens, to sort out family poverty and to provide more funding for its schools?
