A council which has been handling business in the same way for more than 100 years has updated its methods.

Worthing Borough Council has made the changes after 111 years to meet new Government requirements for all councils responsible for populations of more than 85,000.

The traditional committee system has been axed and a Cabinet set up with a leader and six executive members each responsible for different areas.

The Cabinet comprises Councillor Brian Lynn as leader, Councillor Steven Waight, resources, Councillor Richard Bell, environmental services, Councillor Mark O'Keefe, housing and planning, Councillor Tim Dice, leisure and cultural services, Councillor Andrew Garrett, community development, and Councillor David Chapman, economic development and marketing.

It will meet regularly and its programme of meetings will begin on September 6.

Three overview and scrutiny committees, which review the decisions made by the executive Cabinet and members, have been set up.

Sheryl Grady, chief executive at the council, said: "This will be a major change.

"But the transformation will be one I believe will improve the efficiency of the council's decision-making process."
