Passengers travelling from Brighton to Victoria this morning were delayed due to a fire under a train.
The 5.02am Connex SouthCentral train to London Victoria was stopped at Gatwick after reports of flames under the train.
The train was evacuated but there was no sign of flames when firefighters arrived on the platform.
A Connex spokesman said it was likely the train had picked up litter which had then been ignited by electrical motors.
Two trains behind the 5.02 were delayed for 50 minutes and there were ten-minute delays on other services.
