Crawley Town chairwoman Jo Gomm has blasted the Dr Martens League for not extending the season.

Gomm cannot understand why the league is deciding to make teams play three matches a week, rather than extend the campaign for a further fortnight.

The FA has allowed leagues some leeway by making May 31 the deadline for all fixtures to be completed. But at the moment, fixtures secretary Dennis Strudwick is planning to have all matches in the Dr Martens League completed by Saturday May 5.

Gomm said: "I cannot understand why they don't extend the season. The Unibond League has already taken the step.

"We've got ourselves into a situation now where we are supposed to play just over an average of three games every week. That is going to cause problems.

"The bad weather has already lost the club a lot of money. With no income, we still have to pay players and when the games are played I can't see big gates being attracted.

"What average punter can afford three matches a week? It's a lot of money to find and attendance figures are bound to dip."

The Ryman League is due to meet in the next fortnight to discuss the possibility of an extension and Strudwick and his committee are expected to meet soon too.

But Gomm believes they should act now.

She said: "The sooner we can plan fixtures in an extended period the better."

Reds had 13 Premier Division matches remaining ahead of today's match at Burton Albion, not to mention this Thursday's Dr Martens League Cup semi-final against Kings Lynn and possibly a two-legged final if they win.

Boss Billy Smith is not too concerned. He wants the season to finish as soon as possible.

He said: "Apart from the cup, we're playing for pride now. It's been an awful season, the worst I've ever known for the amount of games being called off.

"That hasn't helped us. It's all been stop, start and we can't really get into a rhythm in these situations."

The Broadfield Stadium's playing surface has been a cause for concern. The club are talking to their council landlords and hopeful a new drainage system will be installed during the summer.

Midfielder Gus Hurdle, who spent a few months on loan at Crawley from Basingstoke, has signed dual forms with the club. He is currently playing for Dulwich Hamlet, but Smith insists he has only been signed as cover.

Smith said: "Gus has a new job now and can do a bit more travelling."
