A man who died after suffering head injuries at a nightclub has saved the life of a fifth person.

Organs from Hove plasterer Anthony Evans were successfully transplanted to four people last month and now a pensioner has received a life-saving heart valve.

Last night, Mr Evans's mother Maureen told for the first time of the grief she feels and how she is now mourning two children.

Mr Evans's death was a double blow for his family. His 13-year-old sister died the day after his birth and his mother, who said she was never able to grieve properly at the time, is now trying to come to terms with both deaths.

Joanna Routledge, regional transplant co-ordinator, said the 75-year-old man who received the heart valve was recovering well.

She said: "All the transplants were successful and the news has given a great deal of comfort to Anthony's family.

"They are still in the early stages of grieving and while nothing can bring Anthony back, this does mean good has come out of his tragic death.

"To give life not just to one but five people is absolutely wonderful and I am utterly humbled by his family's bravery and generosity."

Two men, 29 and 27, both close to death, received a kidney each and are starting to live normal lives.

A 66-year-man and a two-year-old child received parts of Mr Evans's liver. The child had never known life outside a hospital until now.

The wife of the pensioner, who is still in hospital but in a satisfactory condition, expressed thanks for "giving my husband a second chance".

Miss Routledge said: "Not all transplants are successful but I know all recipient families are eternally grateful to donors for giving their loved-ones another chance at life."

Mr Evans's workmates, who carried his coffin at his funeral in February, have promised to carry donor cards.

In the wake of the Alder Hey Hospital scandal in Liverpool, supplies of organs for transplants have declined but Mr Evans's family urged people to think again.

His brother, Andy Evans, 39, said: "We should all be brave enough to offer our loved-ones' organs.

"I just know Anthony would be really pleased to know he had saved five lives."

Mr Evans, 29, leaves two young daughters, Elle and Lauren.

He died after suffering head injuries in an incident at The Escape Club on Brighton seafront in January.

A 25-year-old man has been charged with murder.
