Pub landlady Sue Wood is something of a celebrity at her village pub because she is recognised from her other job - as a dentist.

The 43-year-old says she finds it strange to pull out customer's teeth and then pull them a pint the next day.

Sue says she often dreamed of running a pub while she gave patients fillings and crowns.

So she now combines working at the Clock Tower practice in Brighton with running the Abergavenny Arms in Rodmell, near Lewes.

She spends three days working on teeth and four days at the pub and admits she is often exhausted at the end of the week.

Sue, who lives in Rodmell, said: "The similarities between the two jobs are they both involve contact with the public but obviously on a very different level.

"People are generally very happy to see me in the pub when they want a drink but view me with trepidation at the dentist.

"There have been a few surprised customers who have seen me at the dentist practice but did not know I also worked in the pub.

"I have always had a love of beer. I was brought up in South Africa where everyone loves a drink and I started at an early age. I do enjoy beer enormously.

"I bought the pub mainly for these reasons. I live in the village so when the pub came on the market I really wanted it and thought it would be a great idea.

"The worry was it would become one of these themed chain pubs but I wanted to keep it in the hands of the locals."

She finds it hard to say which one of her two jobs she prefers.

She said: "Being a landlady is far more relaxing and probably more fun than being a dentist."

She is also involved in ordering beer and stocking up along with other managerial duties at the pub.

Sue went into dentistry after qualifying in 1982 because she decided she wanted to be a professional.

She said: "My mum also said it would be a good profession for a woman and said I would never be poor."

Sue is hazy about her future ambitions and said: "Hopefully, I will be lying on a beach somewhere. I do have lots of ideas but nothing is fixed."

The Abergavenny Arms, in Newhaven Road, is holding its first beer festival next Friday and Saturday.

The event will feature 20 real ales, two ciders and live music from Iguanahead and The Hofners.
