I am heartily sick of the constant whining by feeble- minded "liberals" concerning the conditions in Lewes prison.

There is a pernicious culture in this society of pity for the offender and absolutely no regard for the victims of crime, whose lives are often wrecked by the experiences they have suffered.

Every inmate in Lewes prison is a volunteer. They have made a choice to offend. If they don't like the hospitality, they should avoid going there in the future.

The enormous number of people who volunteer again for further sentences shows it isn't hard enough to be a deterrent or a punishment. It represents an occupational hazard.

Why are they excused from responsibility by having their poor home background cited as the reason for their offending behaviour?

Plenty of people in similar circumstances don't offend and plenty of people from well-off backgrounds offend as well.

Prison should, as a last resort, be an unpleasant place. The criminal justice system is geared towards the offender. There are more victims than offenders and most of them would be horrified if they saw how cushy prison actually is.
