In the early Eighties, a coin-operated machine arrived in video arcades throughout Britain called Galaxian.

The game was a simple variant on Space Invaders - the grandfather of all shoot-em-ups - where the player controlled a spaceship to take out countless waves of aliens that descended from the top of the screen.

Twenty-odd years later, with all things Eighties fashionable again, JVC thought it was time to update the idea. The result, Ray Crisis, the third in a series, is just like a Spandau Ballet album - it does not age well.

The minimal plot is explained in the usual overly-serious PlayStation manner.

Graphics are sharp and well animated but nothing can disguise the tired genre.

The game does not offer enough excitement to keep the average player's interest going for long.

There are far better shoot-em-ups and this one is best avoided.
