Arts WEEK: Little Chelsea, that part of the town centre which is bounded by Grove and Cornfield roads and South Street, is having an Art Trail of arts and crafts until Saturday. Pick up a programme from any of the shops in this area.

MOIRA HOUSE GIRLS SCHOOL: Four pupils aged under 12 have reached the finals of a national prep school swimming competition in which 60 schools participated while the school's cricket team recently gained victory over Roedean School in the Sussex Women's Evening League.

ART SHOW: Eastbourne Artists Association is holding its annual exhibition at the Towner Art Gallery in Old Town until June 25 (closed on Mondays). Admission is free; telephone 01323 417961 for opening hours. On Sunday afternoons tea with home-made cakes are available at the gallery.

Parish Council: Mr R Skeet, chief technical officer of Horsham District Council, and Mr B Etherington, local transport planner from West Sussex County Council, met the parish council on May 22 to discuss development of the village enhancement and traffic calming scheme.

Mr Skeet passed around plans for attractive gateways at all entrances to the village, indicating the traveller is entering Billingshurst and requesting care in driving. These are included in Phase One, to be put in effect this autumn.

Also planned is a narrowing of the road outside Springwood and Meadowside in West Street. Along with the current Weald School coach park construction on the A29, the Parbrook footpath will be widened.

Mr Etherington explained traffic calming work will not be started until the water main contractors have finished digging up the road in January 2001. However a short-term road narrowing could go ahead to demonstrate what it would achieve

Open Day at Townlands: Townlands extended a warm welcome on their open day on May 24 for National Sheltered Housing Week. Seated comfortably in the freshly decorated lounge, the residents showed off the new dining room furniture they had themselves raised money to buy.

Scheme manager Coreen Anderton invites everyone to come along to the Townlands Coffee Morning on July 1.

Millennium Map: The grand launch of the map took place on May 12 when the Millennium Map Group handed over the framed map to the parish council. The map is hung in the entrance hall to complement the WI tapestry.

Busy sales of prints followed. Further copies can be purchased from Books and Things and The Library. There are two sizes at £2 and £3.

Antiques Roadshow: Billingshurst Junior School Hall took on the air of a treasure trail as strangely shaped packages were unfolded to reveal family heirlooms and ancient objects last Thursday. About £80 was raised towards the Junior School Library

Band Concert: Saturday once again saw the superb Luckett's (Southsea) Band raise the roof at Billingshurst Village Hall with a programme of music including Irving Berlin, Rimmer marches and Lennon and McCartney.

MARATHON MAN: Congrat-ulations to Adam Mayhew who successfully completed the London Marathon last month and in so doing raised just over £1,000 for the Sussex Cancer Treatment Furn and in turn Adam would like to thank everybody who sponsored him and gave him so much support.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: The society's next big event will be on June 14 when Malcolm Emery will be entertaining them with his expertise on local nature and giving a talk about nature in our gardens. The meeting starts at 7.30pm.

The next show for the Horticultural Society will be held on July 1 on the recreation ground as part of the millennium celebrations.

CHURCH NEWS: The weekend celebrations at St Dunstan's Church went well with the weather being kind enough on Saturday afternoon to allow the Garden Fete to be held in the lovely gardens of John and Silvina Saull. About £441 was raised.

Later in the day, the rain didn't stop a full church for the Friday Singing Group's Concert which was enjoyed by audience and performers alike. The Haydn Missa Brevis, St Joannis de Deo, was repeated by the Group at the Sunday morning Eucharist service. It was lovely to welcome Tim Dolan back for the weekend to accompany us.

BADMINTON: Tuesday sessions are held on the first and third Tuesday of the month between 10am-noon in the Freshfield Hall. New players, and children under five, are welcome.

PAINTINGS: Natural Forms is the title of an exhibition and sale of paintings by Lindy Corio and Chris West being held at the Ashdown Forest Visitors Centre at Wych Cross from now until July 2. Times are 2-5pm weekdays and 11am-5pm weekends.

BEER FESTIVAL: The annual Glastonwick Beer Festival is being held at Southwick Community Centre from Friday to Sunday.

BARN DANCE: Don't forget the barn dance and spit roast which takes place in Wilbees Farm Barn by kind permission of Andrew and Sue Johnston at 7pm on Saturday, June 17.

JUMBLE: Last month's jumble sale had many helpers and visitors with a grand total of £122 raised for the village hall funds.

CHURCHYARD: Many thanks go to those who agreed to help in the work on the Wilmington churchyard which has continued to benefit from their generous effort. Angela Morris tends the area round the War Memorial and keeps the Henry Collis memorial garden in good order. The rough old hedge of sycamore is being trimmed this month by Edward Whitley and Mike Gillett.

ART SHOW: An art exhibition in aid of the Samaritans takes place in the great barn at Milton Court Farm, Milton Street, near Alfriston, on June 17-18, 10.30am-5.30pm. Many local artists will display works in oils, water colours and pastel.

BIRTHDAY: Brighton Marina's 21st birthday takes place this weekend. Festivities will start on Saturday at noon and will include street entertainers, Army displays, simulator, climbing wall and many more attractions. From 7pm on Saturday there's country and western dancing followed by a firework display at 10pm. On Sunday at 7pm there's Latin dancing to a salsa Band.

MUSIC: St George's Midsummer music season starts on June 10 with violinist Christopher White. On June 17 there's the Joe Robinson Jazz Quintet and on June 24 the Brighton Consort with 16th Century choral music. Concerts start at 7.30pm. FAREWELL: The French Convalescent Home saw its last resident leave on May 12. "All have now settled into new homes in the area," said Alan Reed, who is now looking after the security of the home.

It will remain in French ownership until July 31 when it transfers to Bovis who following the successful Argus campaign have decided to sell the now listed building.
