A young singer has been presented with a music prize by a Radio 1 DJ.

Rose Miller, from Seaford, received the Access to Music award from Edith Bowman, who co-presents a show on the station every weekday.

The 23-year-old was preferred for Outstanding Student of the Year above all her colleagues at ATM Studios, Enterprise Point, Melbourne Street, Brighton.

Rose has been performing for three years.

In June this year she was selected from thousands of students across the country to perform at the National Festival of New Music at De Montfort Hall, Leicester.

When she finishes her Access to Music course, Rose is hoping to do an internship with a record label or further her studies at university.

The ATM awards recognise the achievement of students from all genres of popular music.

The ceremony in London last week was attended by Beatles producer Sir George Martin.

Rose said: "It was very rewarding to receive recognition for my efforts."

Martin Rossiter, Rose's tutor, said: "Rose has three qualities that make her stand out - talent, application and guts. It is these qualities that will give her a fighting chance in the industry. I would be very surprised if I don't end up buying her albums in the very near future."

Rose is performing with other students on Tuesday, January 24, at the Cella Bar at the Sanctuary Caf, Brighton. Find out more at www.accesstomusic.co.uk
