I agree with Michael James and M Forrest there should be a debate (Letters, March 11). However, three or four letters in your pages against wild birds have had no counter argument and Michael James favours a cull, perish the thought.
I agree a ban on imported birds might be prudent but it is important to keep a sense of proportion and not cast doubts only over wild birds.
After all, there are some 900 million factory-farmed birds in Britain whose remains are ground up with their faeces for use as fertilisers, spread on fields, where many species of wild bird land to feed.
Why is this potential health hazard not being condemned? And is it not time to ask why all these diseases (Bird Flu, Swine Fever, Bovine TB, Foot and Mouth Disease and BSE) keep showing up?
I suggest we humans cause them by giving animals and farmed birds inappropriate living conditions and feed.
Why is this not also being condemned?
