I was under the impression Brighton and Hove City Council, elected by local people, should support its residents.

It appears not.

Despite ever-growing opposition to Karis's King Alfred development plan, deputy council leader Sue John insists it should still go ahead. It has been criticised by Government advisers and English Heritage.

The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) say parts of the plans for the King Alfred site in Hove would be out of keeping with its surroundings and the sports complex would be too difficult for the public to access.

Yet the council still throws our money at it, although they said it would not cost the residents of Brighton and Hove a single penny.

The land has increased substantially in value since it was last valued - The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors recently announced land prices have increased 30 per cent in 12 months and 130 per cent since the early Nineties. Karis would be the only ones to benefit.

We do not want a mini village in Hove in order to have a new but reduced sports centre, more traffic, more pollution, brightly coloured blocks and a ruined seafront.

Wake up, Sue John, and listen to the residents who keep you in a job at least for the next 12 months.
