Sussex FA to stamp out abuse directed at young footballers

Sussex football bosses have vowed to wage war on verbal abuse directed at young players.

Pushy parents venting anger and inciting foul play along with back chatting referees top the hit list of issues to be tackled by the county’s FA.

Ken Benham, chief executive of the Sussex County Football Association, which governs the local game, said there was no place for abuse, either from players or fans, in all levels of the game.

He said: “It's part of the Respect scheme and educating all in football what is right and what is wrong and how they should act.

“The majority of abuse is verbal and unfortunately in the youth game we can have parents on the sidelines urging their players on to take the legs out of their opponents and then abusing the ref in front of the players. There's no need for that.”

Mr Benham said that if clubs don't ensure their supporters and players act in a responsible and respectful manner then the SCFA would issue sanctions including as fines.

The latest push for better behaviour in the game is part of the National Respect campaign launched by the FA three years ago.

they really need to stamp this out at all levels - I cant count the number of times I have been to saturday park matches with trogyloditic football managers screaming at referees with children on the sideline. It needs to stop, football should be a fair game and respect for the referees is just not there.

Much of the problem lies with the examples seen at televised matches from players, managers and pundits.

Having been involved in youth football I can state that the majority of parents are fine. However there is undoubtedly a minority (how big I wouldn't like to say) of parents and coaches who think that winning the Mid Sussex U9s Divison One title is on a par with winning the Premier League.
And of course it's the noisy ones that get noticed. No one pays attention to the twenty or thirty proud mums and dads quietly muttering "Come on Timmy!" whenever their offspring gets the ball; instead it's the more loutish ones shouting "OI REF ******* GET A GRIP AND TIMMY IF HE DOES THAT AGAIN ******* BREAK HIS LEGS!" who people tend to remember.
However as a previous poster has said the adult game hardly sets a good example, unlike rugby for instance.
Anyway good luck to the County FA, but it does need constant vigilance not just the odd campaign.
