So we’ve just had the Children’s Festival and the inaugural Brighton Marathon, what’s next? Brighton is wonderful in that is seems to reel from one event to the next so that there is always something to look forward to. May sees the return of the famous Brighton Festival and its infamous Fringe.

For some reason I always veer towards the Fringe. It’s a cliché but there really is something for everyone and I have bought tickets to see things I will enjoy myself, with my husband and with my son. Family entertainment is being looked forward to in the shape of Mr Pineapple Head, a silent clown at The Brunswick Pub and the Long Nose Puppets performing ‘Penguin’ – Boy’s favourite animal is a penguin and we couldn’t resist.

Husband and I will be viewing a friend’s exhibition ‘You Make Me Gay’ to exclaim over his lush, realistic portraits of personal icons at the Oriental Hotel. We will also be hopefully laughing lots at some German humour in the shape of Henning Wehn and Otto Kuhnle at Komedia. I’ve also booked us tickets to see Paul Zenon’s Cabinet of Curiosities, a louche magic show I have high hopes for!

Husband will be attending an event alone however because I will be performing in it! Yes, the lovely local community choir I am lucky enough to be part of – The Brighton City Singers along with our London sister choirs - will be once again showcasing new music for the Fringe audience. ‘Walls of Sound’ is a choral concert full of new songs concerning buildings – yes, you read right. Buildings, bricks, walls, statues, even a scout hut and the famous Brighton seafront edifice Embassy Court – if it stands upright we’re going to be honouring it with song!

It is important to encourage the writing and performing of new songs and music to keep places like Brighton and its fabulous festivals alive and vibrant with creativity. But that doesn’t mean we won’t be getting our classics out on the night, because we will, as I say the Fringe really does have something for everyone! We like to raise the roof and shake the floor you’re standing on, we’re crowd pleasers after all!

Maybe see you there?

Walls of Sound – directed by MJ Paranzino and featuring her three choirs: The Brighton City Singers, South London Choir and West London Choir appear at St Bartholomew’s Church, Ann Street.
