Parking wardens scared of Brighton bouncers

Parking wardens are refusing to patrol in Brighton and Hove's party district over fears they could be beaten up.

The attendants are not checking for vehicles breaking traffic laws in the busiest part of the city at night time because they say they are being bullied by bouncers.

The news emerged at a public meeting of the Brighton Old Town Local Action Team discussing the problems residents are facing in the West Street, Preston Street and Middle Street areas of the city.

Community leaders told the meeting the number of cars lining the pavements in the area despite double yellow lines was a problem.

But they were stunned to be told that the reason the law wasn't being enforced was because the wardens were too scared to go there.

Regency ward councillor Jason Kitkat told the group: “I have asked why we continue to have this problem of people parking where they shouldn't and I have been told that traffic wardens are intimidated by door staff and will not walk down Preston Street after 10pm.

“It is either employees of the nightclub that are parking up or people dropping off revellers but there is a problem with bully door staff which mean these wardens are concerned for their personal safety.

“I don't want anyone to feel unsafe or come to harm but if wardens can't enforce the traffic laws of the city then we really are facing a sad situation.”

A spokeswoman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “We are disappointed to hear of these issues in West Street and will investigate the claims further.

"This is exactly why Local Action Teams were established and it is feedback such as this which we will be acting upon.

“We would point out that Brighton and Hove is an award-winning authority for the way that it manages its night time economy.

“Our on-street parking enforcement contractor NSL works closely with Sussex Police when carrying out late night enforcement in the area, including recent joint operations in Pool Valley until 2am.

“Drivers are allowed to drop off passengers on double yellow lines but may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice if they park there.”

Inspector Vicky Harris, Sussex Police's head of licensing for Brighton and Hove, said: "I am not aware of this being reported to us as an issue, but I am meeting with local security firms next week and will raise this as a concern.

“Where problems have existed in the past we have supported the council run wardens by accompanying them on late night patrols, but I would stress that this hasn't been because of any problems with security staff."

Why don't they make having a black belt in karate a prerequisite for becoming a traffic warden. Then if any of these cardboard cut-out "tuff"bouncers give them any grief, they can make short work of them.Problem solved!

If it's such a problem why don't they just use the legislation that allows them to install cameras to issue tickets ? Homebase in Shoreham have managed to do it and catch dozens of swimmers from Waders - so nice - B&Q from now on !

Not more of the council boasting about their award for managing the "night time economy". Why don't they face up to the fact that the city centre is a no-go area for decent people at the weekend and do something about it? Reason - they like the money they get from it. It also allows them to be concerned about the health of the drinkers. What a joke!!!

Once again Mary Mears presides over lawlessness and does she or her cabinet ever do anything about it? NO! When will the lot of them do the decent thing and resign. Answer - NEVER. They enjoy their inflation proofed expenses jamboree too much.

Ha ha... what a load of utter ****!

If wardens are threatened, they take a picture of the offender and call for police back-up....

This is such an excuse for laziness///

We don't threaten them, we protect them if required

since when did he OLD TOWN LAT become interested in Preston street? its not in their self proclaimed area. check your maps.. at least it comes under the "Regency Square" group , on the other hand i didnt think that preston street had any places left open in it!
i would love to get the attention of a parking patrol/enforcement officer/whatever after 6pm at night.. spend £2.50 ringing their priority report line - yep will do

it would also be nice to be able to read the minutes of this council attended meeting but unless your a resident or shop owner in the area they defined - you cant.

Naomi Loomes may want to ask if the bouncers are belong to a licensed company and if they have been CRB checked.

maybe this is one area where the patrolling police officers(lol) have the rights to issue Penalty Charge Notices to offending vehicles. i realise they can already do this if any vehicle is actually causing an obstruction, but anyone on double yellows is illegally parked and deserves the ticket issued. so called 'bouncers', or 'door staff' are only getting involved because their 'clientele' are not able to park outside and have to walk from the car park(boo hoo). no one should be abused whilst doing their job, and the council should be looking at closing any establishment whose staff are found to be threatening or abusing others. any security person who abused a member of the public would probably be sacked, so why not if they abused others doing a job! door staff think that they are above others and they are not. i'm sure they don't like being threatened and abused whilst at work, so why should they do this to others?

I doubt its the sober bouncers they are scared of, more of a problem is the 15 pints of Stella brigade who forget the car getting ticketed is'nt there's but remember the ticket they got 6months previous for double parking outside their house, I'll do the job every Friday Saturday night if the price is right.

You are so right, the area has loads of police in it anyway

If the area is dangerous at night I would like a car to be waiting right outside the door to pick me up.
I would hope that the door staff of the venue would tell any parking enforcement officers that the car will be moving on very shortly.
It may not be legal but it is not unreasonable.
Maybe creating some waiting spaces for collection of punters would stop a few of these confrontations.

Why not allow general parking in loading bays and disabled spaces of which there are plenty which after 11pm are usually empty as you dont get deliveries going on after about 9/10 pm and few disabled using spaces when shops/restaurants are shut? Lets face it apart from taxis and night owls their is little traffic about through the night...

Says car driver with axe to grind, personally I wish the parking wardens were harsher, the people I find that moan the most are usually the fat lazy ones that don't want to walk 500 feet.

So all the doorstaff down west street park in and around the area. And so lets say they park legally somewhere in brighton ( not sure where that is possible) Then they themselves can be attacked by the people they have ejected from the pubs and clubs as they walk back to thier cars. And if your going to live in any town or city centre, expect cars to park on double yellows, expect shouting, swearing and peolpe being sick. I'm not saying this is acceptable, just part of living in a town centre. If you don't like it, move.

Could we spread this 'fear' throughout every district of B &H?
Parking wardens are nothing more than over zealous parasites anyway.

Look, if you don't park illegally, you don't get ticketed. As a pedestrian, I hate people that park with no care and attention to the people that use the pavements (wheelchairs, pushchairs etc). Serves you right for parking illegally.
