Brave Worthing sweetshop owner helps catch armed robbers

A brave shopkeeper escaped armed robbers who were arrested minutes later after he took down their number plate and called the police.

The owner of the Sussex Sweet Shop, in Broadwater Street East, Worthing, was forced upstairs by robbers who emptied the safe and stole a mobile phone before tying him up with tape and locking him in the bathroom, at 5.30pm yesterday.

The men ran off but the victim managed to quickly free himself and was able to run downstairs in time to take the registration number of the robbers' car and call the police.

Search units, including the force helicopter, were sent out and the car was stopped with the suspects inside. All stolen property was recovered.

There were no customers in the shop at the time no other members of the public were hurt. Two men and a woman are currently in custody.

Anyone who witnessed what happened or who has information about the incident is asked to call police on 0845 6070999, quoting Op Bowbridge, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

This explains the very annoying police helicopter hovering over our house last evening.

crime in worthing is being committed by a small bunch of morons
since the arrest and conviction of a local drug dealing family there are a small number of morons who are short of cash
the police will apprehend these desperate characters over the next 2 to 3 years and then law and order will slowly be restored
the same thing happened in brighton 20 years ago
armed robberys like this one are old fashioned and belong to another era ..just like the whole town itself!

Like every town/city in the south east there are good and bad areas. I love Worthing but it has a horrendous drug problem as does Brighton and other seaside resorts mainly due to the migration of seasonal workers from all over the world.

Big Nasty: There are good parts and bad parts in every town. I lived in the southern Croydon suburbs for most of my life and only encountered problems in central Croydon. To say that that the whole of the Borough of Croydon is a crime ridden cesspit is out of order as the majority of the east and south Croydon is a safe area to live in.

regarding crime, i do not believe many similarities can be made between Brighton and Worthing
Brighton is now a very much a cosmopolitan city and all types of crimes here are committed by all different types and nationalities
In Worthing most of the crime is drink and/or drug related theft and/or violence ..just like some parts of Brighton used to be 20 years ago
In Brighton these days the varied crime is not just being committed by the same faces and their families ..in Worthing it is!

the "horrendous drug problem" in Brighton may well be influenced by seasonal workers ..in Worthing, there are no seasonal workers who influence to the horrendous drug problem!

everyone knows there are good and bad parts in every town ..but thats irrelevant
the amount of drink/drug related violent crime in Worthing is now comparable to Croydon!

Sorry, I actually reckon Worthing is worse than Croydon (having lived in both)

we need more of these public spirited citizens in this country. if people took more notice of what was happening and passed information on to the police, instead of looking the other way, more crimes would be solved. too much of the 'nothing to do with me' attitude nowadays. well done!

Quite right, where we live so many people were moaning about the state of the place and anti-social behaviour some of us got together, contacted the police, council, young offenders team etc and organised a week of action starting with litter picking, graffiti removal, clearing peoples front gardens, painting communal garage compounds and dealing with abandoned cars, we put 3000 leaflets through letterboxes, had a radio campaign and it was in the local news paper, how many people turned up to help..........10, disgusting!, well done those 10 though and the youth offenders team done brilliantly, the police were excellent especially Sgt P, we had a high police profile and anti-social behaviour dropped by 80%, 6 motorists were stopped for using a mobile phone whilst driving, and even more for speeding (in a residential area), good result all round despite the lack of help from the people that were making the most noise about the problems!.
