There’s very little opportunity for gazing at shoes in Robbie Furze’s triumphant stage performance.

The duo have every reason to be confident; they’ve picked up awards and ticked every box marked ‘band on the way up’ since the release of A Brief History Of Love last year.

In a live context, the duo are joined by the brooding bass of Adam Prendergast and percussionist Akiko Matsuura, and the walls of broken, distorted guitar sound all the better bouncing off the walls of a room. The swooning Velvet pulls off the rare trick of sounding widescreen and anthemic without bowing to trite sentiment.

But for all the broken-glass guitar and swirling noise, the Big Pink’s live show speaks more of their potential than fully-formed outfit. Stripped of their treatments, it was hard not to wonder how much meat would be left on the bones of some of the songs here.

Nevertheless, the band delivered a big enough performance to win over a crowd noticeably disappointed when their set was cut short.
