Impact Dance Company brought their urban, hip-hop theatre down from the streets of London to the green of Brighton.

The youthful dance troupe easily made the transition to the South Coast as they wooed the crowd with their high-energy manoeuvres, to full volume Hip Hop music, choreographed by Artistic Director Hakeem Onibudo.

The company, which formed in 1995, recruits young people aged 13 to 21, with “ability, ambition and dedication”, giving them an opportunity to express themselves through dance and to perform in the UK and abroad.

Different individual and group performances told different stories as Hakreem encouraged the audience to make as much noise as possible.

One dancer, Dwane, told the crowd what it was like to be a dancer. He described it as “like any other job, hard work, but if you have a passion for something, you should never be afraid to follow your dreams and achieve the impossible”.

The 80s-inspired performances included a remixed Thriller, and various street-based stories which culminated in breakdancing and spectacular spinning on heads and finger tips.

There was the women’s clothes store owner, sweeping between the aisles, before a male mannequin dramatically came to life and began backflips and robotic, superhuman moves.

In another performance the star performer played a girl who was unwell and dramatically “threw up” a yellow substance at the edge of the stage.

The costumes were also modelled on an urban street-style, with some girl dancers wearing multi-coloured florescent skirts, which complemented the colourful and bold production.
