Eastbourne top of the pops for UK holidays

Eastbourne has edged out the competition to be named the most holiday-friendly area of the UK - including its Sussex coast rival, Brighton.

Eastbourne beat Manchester into second place in a survey of the places best suited for UK holidays.

Third was Birmingham, with the Cotswolds area fourth, Leeds fifth and Bournemouth sixth.

In contrast, Wells in Somerset was considered the least holiday-friendly place, followed by the Orkney Islands, Bude in Cornwall and the Shetland Islands.

Grant Bather of Virgin Money Travel Insurance, which commissioned the survey, said: "Everyone's idea of a great holiday is different and the UK has plenty of great places to visit.

"But this year it's definitely Eastbourne for the all-round experience. For the classic seaside experience, Eastbourne wins hands down."

Each area was rated for average weather, hotel availability and cost, attraction availability and cost, restaurant availability and beach cleanliness.

What do you think? Is Eastbourne a better holiday destination than Brighton? What would be your recommendations to holidaymakers in Sussex?

Great if you don't mind coachloads of 80+ old dears, norovirus and rip off prices! Ash permitting you can have a fortnight in the sun for the price of a week in Geriatrica!

It doesn't matter what the people of Brighton think about coming here for a holiday. It matters what people all around the country think, and they have spoken.

How can anyone who lives in Brighton judge what it's like for a holiday?

Anyway, Brighton isn't a holiday resort. It's a place for wannabe right0on poseurs.

I do like Eastbourne but I wouldn't spend a holiday there. An afternoon is enough. The beach is OK, the Pier is Okish, the new art gallery is good but the seafront just looks like so many other seaside towns and the centre is just a clone town. I understand why it is attractive to older people but spending a whole week there must get a bit boring.

How representative is Virgin Money Travel Insurance? Ignore this like every other survey and do and go where you want.

Bude has a population of 9000 and probably swells to 10000 at the height of the season,so why survey that place? You'd be hard pressed to find places less interested in incest than the Orkney Islands and the Shetland Islands,so they're to be avoided anyway. Also,I've never heard of anyone holidaying in Manchester!
