The term legend is often over-used with reference to bands but somehow it still seems like an understatement when applied to truly great, original artists.

Seeing charismatic Martha Reeves accompanied (as always) by The Vandellas illuminate the Concorde 2 with her own touch of pure Motown magic really did feel monumental.

Belting through her hits, which include the seminal Jimmy Mack, Nowhere To Run and Dancing In The Street, she was a singer, philosopher and raconteur.

In spite of performing some of the same songs for nearly 50 years, they still sounded fresh.

Martha’s incredibly soulful voice seared through the audience and at almost 70 years old she still managed to send infectious dance fizzles down our spines.

As lyrics and life collided in happy serendipity, there was one song that fitted the balmy summer evening and made perfect sense of the world – Heatwave.

With Concorde’s side door open and glimpses of the sunset over the pier just visible, it didn’t matter if it was Brighton, Chicago or New Orleans – it was just time to dance.
