A road has been closed after a young boy was left trapped under the wheels of a bus.

It is believed the 10-year-old was riding his bike home from school when he was struck by the vehicle.

Eye witnesses say his mangled bike was trapped under the front wheel of the bus and his left leg was underneath the bike.

The incident happened at around 3.50pm in Teville Road, Worthing, close to the junction with Railway Approach.

Despite his injuries the boy remained conscious and was able to talk to the emergency services as they extracted him.

A member of West Sussex Fire and Rescue, who was at the scene, said: “The lad was talking and conscious although clearly in a lot of pain.

“There was no sign of a helmet at the scene.

“He has sustained injuries to the lower part of his left leg.

“Although he was under the bus he was not pinned down by it so ambulance staff were able to take time protecting his spine before carefully extracting him.

“He has now been taken to Worthing Hospital.

“His parents were not at the scene.

“The road is now closed in both directions while we clear it."

Teville Road resident Michael Symes, 60, said: “It must have happened in a matter of seconds. His bike is totally mangled but we could hear him talking.

“I believe the bus was turning into Railway Approach to go to the station but I didn’t see where the boy came from or what happened.”

A police spokesman said: “We received a call to the incident at 15.52.

“We are still at the scene and have closed the road in both directions.

“The boy has remained conscious and his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.”

"The driver of the bus will be questioned as part of the investigation."
