Brighton tipped to become UK's premier seaside resort

Brighton will soon become the country’s all-time favourite seaside resort, according to city tourism bosses.

The claim came after a poll put the Sussex resort in second place behind Blackpool’s kiss-me-quick hats and Pleasure Beach.

But yesterday officials said the city’s ability to attract a more “sophisticated” holidaymaker would mean Brighton soon outstripped its northern counterpart.

Councillor David Smith, Brighton and Hove City Council's cabinet member for culture, recreation and tourism, said: “Blackpool may be in a lot of people's memories as a favourite childhood destination, but it hasn't really moved beyond the bucket-and-spade era.

“It put all of its eggs in one basket and now its guest houses and B&Bs are shutting. “Brighton saw the change happening 20 years ago and we set out to attract the people who come here for short breaks and spend their money in our bars and restaurants, rather than bringing their own food for picnics on the beach..

“Brighton is the future of tourism, whereas I think Blackpool may well be stuck in the past.”

Coun Smith, added he was “delighted” by the poll, which was published by consumer champion Which? Holiday after a survey of 4,000 people.

Brighton and Hove, which has more than eight million visitors a year, received 5.9% of the vote (compared to Blackpool’s 6.7%) and was praised for Brighton Pier, the promenade and the surrounding Downs.

I can see why they would want to talk the city up, but it just reads like rotten eggs because Blackpool came top. The headline shouldnt be Brighton WILL be top one day, but Blackpool IS top now.

I think the Argus have it wrong again. The headlines should have read
"Brighton comes second to Hove as the countries dirtiest place" St James Street in Brighton is not only filthy, it has more drunks and drug addicts than any other place. London road is just as bad.
What I am trying to figure out how come the homeless are about to afford to smoke and drink. There is a woman who stands by a music shop in Western Road. She is smokes non stop. Has a Special brew on the go and has a modern mobile phone.
She is extremely polite, unlike some of the homeless in London road or St James Street. Brighton use to be a lovely place to live but it is noe full of beggars and people who have no intention of working. Sad but true.

As a born and bred Brightonian I am heartily sick and tired of people running the City down. "Betty Blue" states that we are full of beggars and people not willing to work. WE ARE NOT!
Yes of course there are social problems but homeless people more often than not have severe mental health and or addiction issues that require expert help. And to our national shame a large number of these are ex-services.
Our so called Council have missed so many opportunities to approve innovative architecture and chances to make the City a place to proud of.

So being so drunk that you cannot stand up and being sick in the street now counts as a sophisticated tourist according to our council. Great! Blackpool also has three working piers.

They have got to be joking !!! I was in town today and I was disgusted to see the filth and rubbish everywhere. Going to be the top resort - they're having a laugh!!! I used to be proud to live here but not any more and only the expense puts me off moving to a cleaner environment.

The Palace Pier is the only decent attraction we have. At least they keep the drunks and beggars off it.
Do you think the City Council ever go around the City?

No, it WAS the Palace Pier. The Noble Organisation, who own it, renamed it Brighton Pier. Deal with it! Live in the now! :-)

you sound so jealous, just have a sit down with a few of them, crack a can open, and talk about the old days, go on, go on, go on, you know you want to.

B&H just have to clean up the roadworks, the drunks, the street vandalism by visitors on a friday and saturday night... The deserted London Road shops, the delapidated Regency house fronts... Still alot of work to do.

the only thing making this resort remotely successful is private enterprise, the council have ruined the roads congesting them and allowing no parking, the streets and architecture are filthy and the facilities are typical council, cheap and nasty. hove lagoon was a jewell in hoves crown an art deco water gem, now it has a skate park, well done idiots.
