Firefighters went into a burning house to rescue the ashes of a soldier killed in Afghanistan.

They fought their way into the Uckfield home of Private Daniel Gamble, who became the 100th British soldier to die in the country when he was killed aged 22 by a suicide bomber in June 2008.

The fire started in the shed of an adjoining house late on Tuesday afternoon but quickly spread to Pte Gamble’s home – where his mother, Georgina, and brother Jason still live.

Jason and his friends tried to go back into the house to rescue the ashes but were stopped by fire crews.

When they told them what they were trying to save, firefighters went into the building in Piltdown Rise and brought out the ashes as well as Pte Gamble’s Parachute Regiment beret, medals and photographs.

The cause of the fire was being investigated today.
