Police will patrol Hove in barbeque crackdown

Police will patrol the seafront in a crackdown on rogue barbeques.

The move comes after a residents’ association counted 200 scorch marks on Hove Lawns from people using disposable barbecues.

Brighton and Hove City Council, who has already installed Australian-style barbeque stands in Preston Park, have also vowed to discuss options for the area.

Bill Cowell, East Brunswick Residents' Association (EBRA) chairman, said the “destruction” caused by alfresco cooking on Hove Lawns had prompted them to launch an e-petition urging both the council and the police to enforce a bylaw banning barbeques.

He said: “We are not killjoys and we don't want to stop people having barbecues. But we have counted 200 great black scorch marks already and it's only July.

He added: “It takes a year for the grass to grow back and reseeding costs thousands.”

Mr Cowell said the EBRA had also received complaints from residents about breathing in the smoke from the barbecues.

A spokeswoman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Barbecues are not permitted on Hove Lawns and people are given advice and information by the council’s seafront staff about where they can barbecue - which is on certain beaches after 6pm.

“We will be looking into the concerns raised in the petition and Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, the council’s cabinet member for environment, will be responding at his next meeting on July 26.”

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “Local PCSOs have been made aware of this issue via the Brunswick and Adelaide local action team meeting. Sussex Police are now working with Brighton and Hove City Council's seafront officers to conduct days of actions and joint patrols of Hove lawns to assist the council with making sure people follow the appropriate advice when barbecuing. One day of action has already taken place and more are planned throughout the summer months.”

The e-petition has now closed and is due to be sent to the council within the next few days.

There should be police on the beat.

But for a policy change to be based on BBQ's !

How much to police patrols cost compared to re grassing?

Or even supplying disposable BBQ stands?

Most barbequed food is vile, cooked by people who do not usually do so. It is invariably black with a paraffin sauce, and makes a paper plate crumble within a minute or two.

The Council should designate certain beaches as "Salad Beaches".

It's a bylaw so the police have a duty to enforce it. I suppose years ago a park keeper or warden would've had words but no doubt would get a smack in the mouth today. The police can still manage to be listened to....just. Anyway, why the obsession with bbq's, what's wrong with a picnic?

action days! surely there should be a patrol along our seafront every day under any circumstances. the bbqs left red hot on the lawns are also a danger to dogs and children who may step on them.

Yes, there are relevant By Laws, including no cycling on the Hove prom but due to the lack of enforcement no one pays any attention. A year or so ago a young child received very serious burns to her feet due to the ignorant indifference of barbeque users. So, B&H Council, eiither enforce the By Laws or remove them and take the consequences.

I make a perfect baked Alaska sausage. Burnt to a crisp on the outside and icy uncooked pork on the inside. Then within a few hours everyone at my barbecue does a Stacy Slaters mum impression screaming "sausage surprise" as they run and queue for the loo only to sample my chilli powder loo roll.
How I love barbecue's

Are they serious?

Can't the Police catch muggers, rapists, burglars, muderers, instead of catching the odd sausage muncher on the seafront! pun intended! lol.

I think they have better things to do, unlike some!

How about this for a wacky idea, provide some proper bbq areas on Hove Lawns like other modern cities do... oh no, heritage heritage, think of the children, blah blah blah, get a life moaners!

I haven't seen much crime there in years, especially in the summer when its packed.

Its good to see the lawns being used instead of being just a gap between the beach and the road.
The only problem is the council want a way of making money from this and the "locals" DO NOT OWN THE LAND so they hve NO right to dictate what we do on it. They can post their e-petition up the councils e-rear.

But NO! lets take a stroll along the prom prom prom...

Easy answer here... BBQ's cause scorch marks; ruins the grass; costs thousands to reseed... Easy. Dig up Hove Lawns, concrete it over, and let people have open fires for all we care. How hard is this problem to solve exactly?

I recommend the police book some time along the Hove Lawns this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings - we have 34 degrees centigrade coming on those 3 days....and people will light up a fire in a barbecue to make it even hotter and so they can pretend they are having a really good time while they breathe in the carcinogenic fumes and eat the carcinogenic burnt offerings and sit cross-legged on a lawn, chilling with a beer or a bottle of wine.

Do it on the stones on the beach! It is just plonking obvious that burning lawns is gross and cretinous behaviour and unnecessary. I hope the police hoover in a fortune in fines getting these drones for what they do not accept is CRIMINAL DAMAGE!

It they were animal rights people they would have the cameras out! Why not for these hooligans too?

How come the people of Hove can manage to get the police to work for them?
I contacted my community copper about an issue affecting residents in my street and I got a half baked resposne which basically accepted a crime was being committed but said the police would do nothing about it.
I feel utterly depressed by Sussex Police.

Depressed by Sussex Police!...You will get over it... and in time.. come to view them the way most long term residents, and the other surrounding Police Forces view them... As completely useless.
Do not depend or trust them and you can rest assured that your chances of being apprehended should you transgress are a lot less than minimal. Unless of course, you are one of the BBQ Gang or a Motorist... in which case...LOOK OUT!

If the council wardens and police were doing there job properly in the first place the scorch marks would not be there in the first place and they would not have to go round and waste time counting them so sack them all for not doing there job. But then again it could be small alien space ships landing in Hove before the great invasion of planet Earth .

a few times a year and every year the advice given is not to have a bbq on the stones ..the stones stay hot and dangerous even the next day?.
the police have booked some time this summer on Hove Lawns and so have I because its a very desirable place to be.
how about da authorities book some time this summer where there are problems with crime, like in some of the huge rubbish estates?.
Hove lawns and Brunswick is a lifestyle choice that creates less problems with crime than other areas.

agreed, although there are many by-laws which are continually broken. especially the one about cycling on the promenade!!! if the dreaded PCSO's are about, then they really want to ensure ALL the by-laws are kept to. no barbeques, no cycling and keeping dogs on leads, to name just 3.

Scorched Earth Policy was working well at 1.00 pm today Sunday 18th BBQ's smoking away ... Perhaps the Police had left their Protective Vests at home...as one Officer had badly singed his eyebrows in a similar incident 10 years ago....

BBQs are anti-social. Some people stink the area out with them. Also the food cooked on them is a recipe for food poisoning - raw on inside, burnt on outside. If people want to eat outside then fine but why dont they cook it properly in the kitchen and then take it outside to eat. I dont get it.
Also in the report it says, "Brighton and Hove City Council, WHO has already installed Australian-style barbeque ..". Shouldn't that be 'which'?

Oh let people have their BBQs on the lawns, that grass is in a terrible state anyway.
Leave it until October then clean it up again ready for next year.
And why the police? What are seafront patrol for if not this?

14 years ago, some friends and me started to play football on the lawns on a Sunday morning. It became a place to meet, keep fit, and keep us off the streets (and not out to late on the saturdays). This great activity then attracted other people, and we made friends with all different walks of life, that are still friends now.
My point?
Well, the sad old loners of EBRA wanted to ban us from playing there and got the council, Police, and the Argus involved. They claimed it was organised games, that we were charging people to play, and that there were fights, drinking and drug taking! All of this was lies, and we invited the council, the Argus and the police to turn up randomly and see for themselves. Not one of them took up this offer!
It seems again that the NIMBY people of Brunswick want to install their lonely, life hating beliefs on others.
The seafront belongs to us all, we should respect each other, and that goes both ways. If having a bar-b-q, do it sensibly and leave no mess or hot coals or scorch marks. If sitting in your flat looking out to sea, then try and enjoy the different aromas of flame grilled cooking!

EBRA....my apologies for getting my facts wrong. You are right of course, i should have known you started using this name 5 years ago. If only i could remember what the residents of Brunswick were calling themselves back then, i would have typed it. Ever noticed how how "rouge traders" often close down their companies, then open up identical ones under different names? hmmmm!!!
So, forgive me getting the name wrong...but it is the same people doing the same thing...AGAIN.
