One parking ticket every seven and a half minutes in new Brighton zone

A parking ticket was issued every seven and a half minutes on the first morning of new restrictions in Kemp Town.

Motorists have accused parking wardens of “harassing” them and said more warnings should have been issued before the tickets began to fly.

Forty tickets were dished out on Monday in the first five hours of new extensions to Zone H, around the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, which includes a mixture of resident parking permits and pay-and-display zones.

For Marcus Bevan, who was doing building work at a house in Bristol Road, it meant moving his van every two hours.

He said: “The wardens harass you. They’re straight on you as soon as you’re a few minutes over. It means I lose a lot of time driving around looking for a space instead of getting on with my work.”

Thomas Buzzing, 38, from Hove, narrowly avoided a ticket when he returned to his car on Bristol Gardens with seconds to spare.

He said: “I can understand they’ve got a job to do but sometimes there’s no reasoning. Forty tickets in a few hours is a bit over the top. Issuing warnings would have been a good idea on the first day.”

Arun District Council began its new parking enforcement programme this month with a two-week “amnesty”, in which motorists were handed parking tickets with no charges on them.

But according to Coun Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for environment at Brighton and Hove City Council, motorists were suitably warned.

He said: “Parking wardens issued 600 warning letters to drivers last week in the run up the scheme going live. In addition, work has been going on since early June putting up signs and painting lines.

“Also every resident living in the area will have received a letter with information about the scheme, and inviting them to apply for a permit.”

8 tickets an hour......
Slightly less emotive.. Residents have been complaining about the parking for years... now they can have permits... You get what you deserve, you just do not always deserve what you get...

This I don't get. Surely he just pays for the parking and rolls it into his costs for the client. Not an unreasonable expense to ask for.

All cars parked in Arundel Road area when roads were being marked were regularly leafleted with news of the starting date. Any drivers who fail to see the notices and ticket machines now must be going around with their eyes shut. Roads are much quieter now that commuters have stopped using this area as their free daytime parking place.

Why didn't Marcus Beven just buy one of the day work parking passes the council sells, park his van outside the house and get on with the work?

Sounds like he came up with a crafty excuse to have a break every couple of hours.

Perhaps all the displaced motorists could now park in Roedean Road and thus discourage all the coaches tht have been parking there. There, two problems solved.

The city will soon become a haven for muesli eating parasites cycling past boarded up shops on their way to the dole office.

i was working in doing sub contract gas work in Brighton in the Spring it is a nightmare as i was doing multiple jobs at multiple addresses , you cannot get a permit for multiple parking zones or so i was told , i am not sure about the roads mentioned but if you do move your van ie i would get called off for an emergency job and then have to return your then breaking the law for returning within the no return time limit , i do respect that these restictions need to be in place but if your trying to work in the area its a mare .

Anyone help with this one please - we've got to go to Sx County for a 2pm appt, how easy is it to park around that area? There is a multi-story car park I believe - but is it usually full? Perhaps someone local to the area could tell me? My husband has a disabled sticker, by the way.

When I go to Sussex County I drive to Brighton Marina where there is a free parking and then catch a number 7 bus and I am there in 10mins.

Alternatively, park at lovely Lidl at the end of Eastern Road and catch almost any bus (1,1a,7 etc) on the other side of the road; they all stop at the hospital.

Park longer than one hour at Lidles and a firm of debt collectors trace you through the DVLA and send a fine through the post. This happened to a friend of mine and it really is not worth the grief. The Marina is the best option.

I.m a plasterer, and i cant just up and leave to move my car and find another space as my work would be ruined. Plaster has a setting time and my work is ruled by that! Plus, as i use a car for my work tools and eqipment i cant get a permit either...

the meters do not allow you to park for longer than 2hrs so you have to move on and then you cannot return to that space for a further 4hrs - hence the need to constantly drive around looking for a space - waivers are not available in every road and there is usually only one waiver per road and now you have to take a job sheet into the parking office to prove you are not joe public trying to scam cheap parking for a day. i am in the building trade and spend an average of £50 a month on parking - this council does not like trades people - we exist for revenue purposes only. ditto all the visitors that fall foul of the over zelous parking restrictions.

Draconian parking restrictions are in place to provide our brothers from the former Eastern Bloc countries with employment at the expense of strangling the life out of every business in the city. In Lewes the wardens don't even give you a chance to get out of the car before they start noting the registration. Centuries old businesses in the town have had to close because their customers have been driven away. Theoretically you cannot even stop on your way to work and buy a newspaper without first purchasing a parking ticket. It is time that Brighton and Hove Council wakes up to the fact that parking restrictions are a disaster for the local economy especially at a time when 3,000 public sector jobs are to be cut in Sussex. The price to be paid for this stupid obsession with yellow lines will be boarded up shops, unemployment and of course crime which always accompanies run down areas.

Just come back from holiday in Provence. None of this crap there. Park where you want for as long as you want. Cause an obstruction though and you'll need a mortgage to pay the fines (on the spot or you're in clink until you pay) No messing and it works because everyone knows it's fair!

As per the advise on www.moneysavingexper
t.com and from the BBCs Watchdog - ignore these unenforcable demands from these scum companies.

Regards the parking extention from Brighton & Hove Council - it's nothing but a money making scheme - it doesn't help people to park. Councillor Theobald doesn't care as he lives in a very big house on Dyke Road Avenue with loads of free parking.

I am having extensive building work done on my central Brighton House.

I have also just had a new Gas Boiler installed by British Gas.

Residents can obtain daily parking vouchers for their workmen and their own friends when they visit. I provided these permits to my workmen... so why can't others?

can't say i'm surprised! people do not, or cannot, read the signs. if, as they say, these signs went up from june, then people really have no excuse. tombraider 59, with a disabled badge, you can park on double yellows for up to 3 hours, as long as you park sensibly, and not cause an obstruction.

Yes, thanks for that. Hubbie has had a look and he thinks the double yellow line solution is not a good one for that particular area. I must day that parking at the Marina is a good option - thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

if you do bus in from lidl's ask for a "short hop" - £1 per adult one way between lidl and gala bingo. if you just ask for a adult single you'll get charged £1.80

£50 a month parking......not bad value when you consider most builders want £100 per hour labour!.......

Where are they parking now for free - Wilson Avenue. This is a main entry/exit route for East Brighton, including the emergency services. Traffic at the bottom of Wilson Avenue is now having to move with great care - large vehicles are having to wait and give way because of all the parked cars. Sussex County Hospital really needs its own Park & Ride. Parking in the Marina will only result in restrictions being enforced there - officially the free parking in the multi story is 4 hours only. A hospital appointment can take longer than that.

Question to all the green anti car brigade. When cars are clean, green, electric or other non polluting propulsion, so no fumes or pollution, will you stop moaning about the car and welcome them ? Is it actually the people in cars you are against or the pollution ? Personal transport will always exist, and car ownership is increasing, 14% in the last 8 years - so the question is how can it be made acceptable and people friendly.

his customers may not be so happy that every couple of hours he has to leave the job and spend 15-20 mins finding a new place to park.

I am in full support of Brighton-man's comment; Click on the following link to see their A-Z of "services" provided by Brighton and Hove Council.

http://www.brighton-
hove.gov.uk/index.cf
m?request=b1104347

The extensive list on the first page has just the ones beginning with "A"; they go all the way through to "Z". One shudders to think what kind of salaries the heads of all these departments are on. Let us start by eliminating the ones that serve no purpose at all except to reinforce the council's stance on political correctness and work our way up until we reach the ones that impact on real life in Brighton. On top of having to finance a bloated and ineffectual council by our every movement being taxed we have to put up with the illiterate and sneering remarks from people whose only environmental qualifications are absenting themselves from literacy classes and washing their "cardy" twice a year (Greenlover?)
