Sussex parents prosecuted after children miss lessons

Hundreds of Sussex parents have been taken to court for not sending their children to school.

71 parents have been prosecuted in the county in the last three months alone after persistently failing to ensure their children went to classes.

Among the cases heard by magistrates were a girl who attended only one in every 20 lessons and other children who had failed to attend school for months at a time.

Many parents were fined or given conditional discharges and one parent was even electronically tagged and given a curfew.

Magistrates also ordered some parents to carry out community service.

East Sussex had the highest number of prosecutions, with 147 in the last academic year.

probably not!! once kids reach a certain age, say 12/13, they tend to take themselves to school, so, once out of the door, the parents think they are attending. it is only when they get the letter or knock on the door that the truth comes out. this is even more true when both parents work, and may well already be out when the kids are supposed to leave for school. some schools will phone parents if there is an instance of failure to attend, but what can the parent do if they are already at work. primary school age kids are a different matter altogether, as parents will take them to school. morpheus, we also need to knpw the ages of the kids involved, and even what schools. maybe there is a large section of non-attendance at certain schools!! half a story again, really.
