Disgraced vicar Alex Brown could have been caught up in an international sham marriages scam.
He officiated at more than 360 weddings which helped illegal immigrants to stay in the UK.
Brown was arrested after police and UK Border Agency officers raided St Peter and St Paul's church, St Leonards in June last year.
There have also been raids on at least a dozen suspect church weddings across the UK which may be connected.
Gareth Redmond, of the UK Border Agency, said: “At the back of these there is something larger.
“There is the potential that this is a bigger organised crime gang.”
