A fire engulfed more than 600 square metres of grassland narrowly missing an electrical sub station.
Firefighters tackled the blaze for more than one hour at the site off Canterbury Road, Worthing.
Crews from Worthing Station were called at about 4pm today but it is unclear how the blaze started.
The fire was just metres from the sub station when crews got it under control.
A spokesman for West Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “An area 20 by 30 metres is severely damaged.”
