A HUSBAND and wife escaped with minor injuries after their car came off the road and ended up on its roof in a ditch.

The accident happened on the northbound carriageway of the M23 on the Sussex and Surrey border.

The driver lost control of his vehicle and it crashed down an embankment.

The female passenger had to be cut free from the Ford Focus by firefighters.

She and her husband were taken to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill but were not badly hurt.

The car had to be winched out using specialist equipment from Crawley fire station.

Drivers faced long tailbacks following the accident, which happened at around 10.15am on Saturday.
