Nelson Mandela, Bono and Tony Blair – these humble chairs have all offered the global celebrities support in their time.
But after years of cushioning a little more than famous people’s egos, the four-legged seating is retiring from the rat race.
The chairs from the Brighton Centre are being given a new lease of life with volunteer and community groups across the city.
Penny Parker, of the Brighton Centre, said: “They are a real part of social history.”
The Brighton Centre will now buy new chairs.
The seats were advertised on Brighton and Hove City Council’s internal website It is part of the local authority’s drive to cut down on waste.
Of the 500 on offer, 300 have already been snapped up.
