Arrests after jeweller is "followed" through Sussex

A jeweller called police fearing he was about to be robbed after a carload of men followed him into Sussex.

Police said they found weapons, gloves and a mask when they stopped the suspicious car as the jeweller drove into the county.

Five men were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and were being questioned in custody yesterday.

The 45-year-old jeweller raised the alarm at about 5.45pm on Thursday as he drove down the M23 past Gatwick.

He had become aware of a black Renault Megane apparently following him shortly after leaving Birmingham earlier that day.

Sussex Police's road policing unit was called out and stopped the Megane in a lay-by in Pyecombe.

The jeweller also stopped and was taken to safety.

Police said there was no violence and no injuries or damage as a result of the operation.

The force confirmed he was carrying stock for a Sussex jewellery shop but have not released the name of the shop or the value of the jewellery.

Five men, aged 26, 27, 28, 29 and 43, all from Birmingham, were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery.

How do you figure that? They responded to a phonecall.
I would call that reactive.
Sussex police have demonstrated their ability to answer a phone and to direct a police car to that callers location. Well done.

The jeweller is lucky they did not charge him for using his mobile phone whilst driving.

All I see is people commenting on the bad job sussex police do well I can assure you they do a good job proactive or reactive i'm not bothered we had an attempted break-in and they came out then socco turned up to take print etc.

If anyone could do a better job why don't you apply to be a policeman/woman

Sussex Police’s performance in solving crime was rated ‘poor’ by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary’s.
This is the lowest rating possible.
It means that they are not very good.

"Simpleton" says the person who is unable to pluralise or use a possessive apostrophe properly - glass houses and stones and all that ;)

HMIC Also rated Sussex POOR at Solving Crimes and POOR at reducing Road Deaths and Serious Injuries. Look at a similar force in number and size with more roads..HMIC compare Hampshire..and Sussex do not cut the Mustard! Breaking out the champagne and Bunting for answering a telephone call and radioing a Patrol car is hardly Sherlock Holmes...It still took from Gatwick to Pyecombe to respond..20 minutes! Well done Plod. There..Congratulatio
ns..now go off and deal drugs, shoplift and all the other nefarious activities you do.
Simples indeed

When we were "hit" by a stolen credit card on line and the goods sent to a London address, we called Sussex police to report it & they took 2 weeks to ask the Met to investigate the address. No wonder the Met referred to Sussex Police as "Hobby Bobbys".

Good job Sussex Police... and some one beat me to it above - I was going to mention the the difference between proactive and reactive policing.
.
Whilst they didn't stumble across it, this shouldn't detract from the results gained from their swift actions
