A jeweller called police fearing he was about to be robbed after a carload of men followed him into Sussex.

Police said they found weapons, gloves and a mask when they stopped the suspicious car as the jeweller drove into the county.

Five men were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and were being questioned in custody yesterday.

The 45-year-old jeweller raised the alarm at about 5.45pm on Thursday as he drove down the M23 past Gatwick.

He had become aware of a black Renault Megane apparently following him shortly after leaving Birmingham earlier that day.

Sussex Police's road policing unit was called out and stopped the Megane in a lay-by in Pyecombe.

The jeweller also stopped and was taken to safety.

Police said there was no violence and no injuries or damage as a result of the operation.

The force confirmed he was carrying stock for a Sussex jewellery shop but have not released the name of the shop or the value of the jewellery.

Five men, aged 26, 27, 28, 29 and 43, all from Birmingham, were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery.
