The Sussex map that time forgot

This is the map that time forgot – and so did the council.

The last time this town-park chart was updated the Berlin Wall was still being chipped away and Nelson Mandela was giving his first taste of freedom after 27 years inside a South African jail.

For two decades the faded map has stood unchanged in Storrington library’s car park, displaying some pubs and shops that have long-since closed.

Storrington and Sullington Parish Council have now demanded Horsham District Council remove the useless sign for good.

Parish council chairman Ray Dawe said: “No one really knows why they have been left so long.

“Notice boards are a really important part of communities so it's important we get it sorted.”

Closed businesses, including the Eleven Cricketers pub, are still highlighted on the chart. New additions, such as the Waitrose supermarket, are not featured.

A spokesman for Horsham District Council said: “We are grateful for this feedback and it is surprising that this has only recently been spotted.

“We are double checking who the board and map belong to so they can be either updated or removed.”

No picture of the map and multiple grammatical mistakes; looks like Horsham Council aren't the only ones who need to do some double checking.

Perhaps we could hold a competition to find the oldest sign or poster in council and NHS buildings. I bet there are some older than this.
