Brighton and Hove council uses YouTube to advertise jobs

A YouTube video has been created by a council to advertise vacancies - despite having only 15 positions available.

Brighton and Hove City Council created the YouTube channel last month and has so far achieved more than 500 hits.

The local authority believes online listings form an important part of its recruitment programme.

But critics have questioned whether it is necessary as the local authority is scrapping 191 posts this financial year.

Alex Knutsen, of Unison, said the majority of the positions would be filled by the council’s redeployment pool, which is made up its employees whose jobs have been scrapped.

He said: “It may not cost a lot of money but it does strike me as a waste of resources.

The video, which cost £600, was made by council workers with the help of a local cameraman.

A statement from the council said: “While we have significantly reduced the number of jobs being advertised, we will still need to recruit some specialist staff in certain areas in order to maintain services and achieve value for money.

“We are doing everything we can to attract candidates to these posts in what is a very competitive jobs market.”

Only £600? Why did recruiting the new directors cost £120,000? Does this mean that the council has learnt something? Perhaps the £300,000 they spent on advise for cost saving is actually working.

What another dreary video - our John needs to find some enthusiasm and SMILE! I saw how things change at a tremendous pace today when I walked past the West Pier - it is changing fast - for the worse!

was this video commissioned before or after the decision to make cuts. if it was made before just out principle to not make it would have probably been money spent for nothing.
as only 15 vacancies and 191 posts being scrapped I presume some of those posts are in recruitment and personnel

Perhaps Google Ads, which move in even more mysterious ways than God him/herself, will ensure that a link to these jobs appears on the Status Quo website.

I sometimes think that a way with three chords would appear more like Bach when compared with the performance of certain councillors on the anvil.

I’m amazed that the council bother to advertise jobs - we all know that they have already been filled internally and only advertise because the government states that all positions are required to be offered to the public. In reality, there is almost no chance that anyone outside the organisation will get a position of worth and even if you do spend hours filling the application in - they don’t even bother to let you know if you got the job or not.

Jeez, A well-respected and capable chief exec is finally trying to sort out the mess that is brighton and hove council and people still resent his presence. Maybe this is a neccesary attempt to clear out some of the 'got too comfy' crowd and the back-biters, and bring in some new staff. I don't envy his job. trying to organise the 'nursery' of squabblers in a corrupt council torn apart and made impotent by petty party politics. And if anyone from the council licensing dept are reading - Where do you get off granting an alcohol licence to a shop situated among 6 other off-licences and opposite a primary school?! Yep, that's really taking binge and bargain drinking seriously. It's called prostitution B&H! shame on you.
