Mystery over departure of council boss

A county council has refused to reveal why its chief executive stepped down.

West Sussex County Council announced its chief executive, Mark Hammond, went on extended leave from yesterday.

The current executive director, Kieran Stigant, has taken over Mr Hammond's role until the long-term position is settled.

I can think of 101 reasons (all legit) as to why someone would want to go on extended leave and not wish to share it with Argus's readers - its only a mystery because you made it one.

Pass word: hate-know - irony!

The report certainly makes this a mystery. First it say that he has "stepped down", then it says he is "on extended leave" but the council don't seem sure how long this will take to resolve. Never mind, the tax payers will foot the bill while this goes on. And what is the difference between a "chief executive" and an "executive director"? Does one have a bigger office compared to the other?
