A piece of toast set alight starting a kitchen fire in Worthing.
The blaze in South Farm Road broke out at 7.45pm today.
A crew from Worthing fire station attended. The station's watch manager told the Argus: "A mum and her son were alerted by the smoke alarm and went outside. A neighbour called the emergency services and we're only about 90 seconds away so were there really quickly.
"We went in with breathing apparatus and used a fan to clear the smoke.
"The toaster was broken though."
