The heavy scent of “hair pomade” wafted through from “Mumbles Emporium” who set up temporary residence in the back bar of the Concorde 2 on Sunday. Session Stylist Simon was poised to coif the audience into shape, because at The Rumble the look is everything and “rockin’ cuts” are what every cat wants!

This was the second Brighton Rumble All Dayer and the place was packed out for a jive-fest celebrating all things rockin’. The look was American but the talent was predominantly local with three out of the four bands from Brighton.

Opening was youthful Bad Bad Whisky; Skifflebilly with Gospel overtones. Next up was Jailbait, who were confident in spite of an emergency double bass player substitution. Then it was time for the out-of-towners Jack Rabbit Slim, who turned it up and raised the bar, as well as the roof.

Headlining was local swing-tastic Fat 45’s who, as a nine-piece band, literally filled the stage with tight, honey sounds; dusting their jitterbug magic on obvious classics such as Wild Saxophone and less obvious choices like Led Zeppelin.

Rock ’n’ roll impresarios Dave Mumbles and “Lucky” Phil proved once again that Brighton can really rumble.
