Sussex treasure hunter unearths ancient coins

Treasure hunters have unearthed gold and silver coins at a secret site in Sussex.

The four coins date from as far back as 124 BC and were found on land near Pulborough.

The discovery was made by Anthony Gill as he used a metal detector on the land with the owner's permission.

A 16th century silver sword scabbard decoration, or chape, was unearthed in a separate find near Chichester. The exact locations of the finds are being kept secret to protect the sites from thieves who plunder historic sites.

The latest discoveries were made by responsible metal detector enthusiasts who reported the finds to the West Sussex coroner. They were legally declared treasure at an inquest in Chichester, entitling the finders and the land owners to share their value.

Their exact worth will be determined by a tribunal at the British Museum.

Good luck Mr Gill, I've got my own precious piece, my wife, I call her treasure, because people keep asking me 'where the hell did you dig her up from'?

Teasure hunters a rather unfortunate name given to Metal Detectorists , and those who enjoy this hobby, take a dim view to being refered to as such.
The truth is that the chances of finding what may be deemed as treasure is on par with being struck by lightning.
I have enjoyed this wonderful hobby for many years, and many a time I have spent a whole day walking up and down large fields for hours on end , and turned up a couple of WW2 303 cases or a bit of shrapnel.
I have found Roman coins both bronze and silver , but they were here for nearly 400 years so they did tend to drop a bit of loose change, there value , unless they are rare is very little.
Nearly all detectorists that I know, are not interested in the monetry value , they love the history of the coins or artifacts that they find , its a strange feeling when you pick up a coin that was last in a human hand a couple of thousand years ago.
And there is the facility to record all your finds even if you dont belong to a club most detecterists are members of a club.
