A teenage girl was grabbed and pushed against a wall in what police say may have been an attempted sex attack or robbery.
The 17-year-old was walking along Mill Lane in Portslade when the attack happened.
Police said she was very shaken and received superficial injuries before the man ran off when he was disturbed.
Detective Constable Amanda Payne, of Sussex Police, said his intentions were unclear and the attack only ended when he was disturbed by a passing car.
A man was arrested and is being questioned by police.
Police are appealing for information about the attack and said they are keen to speak to the driver of the car.
Det Con Payne said: "I am keen to trace this driver, who may have important information.
"The man's intentions are unclear and detectives remain open minded to the possibility the attack was either an attempted robbery or sexually motivated."
The suspect is described as black, 5ft 6in, slim, of broad build and aged between 20 and 30.
He had roughly shaven hair, stubble and was wearing a black hoodie and jeans.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999.
