Drugs deal link to burnt Brighton body investigated

Detectives are investigating whether a man whose burnt body was found on a golf course was murdered over a drugs deal.

Friends of Stefan Paul Welch revealed he had contact with heroin dealers days before he was killed.

The 37-year-old, whose identity was confirmed by detectives yesterday, was receiving treatment for his addiction and living at a hostel in Oriental Place, Brighton.

Police confirmed they were investigating drug dealings as a line of inquiry as they hunted those responsible for Mr Welch’s murder.

Detectives revealed it was possible Mr Welch, who had a string of criminal convictions, was still alive when his dumped body was set alight.

Mr Welch, who was about 5ft 7in tall and heavily tattooed, was last seen at 2.30pm on Friday in St George’s Place, Brighton.

Court records show the convicted criminal, who went by at least five aliases, had last appeared before magistrates 20 days ago.

He admitted a string of offences including possession of heroin and cannabis and theft at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on August 19.

Mr Welch had already been jailed for two years and nine months after being convicted of dealing heroin and had past convictions for burglary.

Why an I not surprised?
"37-year-old"? Late teens or early 20s a few days ago. Even though the number of false teeth suggested otherwise.

This isn't running the risk of jail this is a brutal murder, this is England not East LA.

You Negate murders due to drugs how long is it going to be until someone who just looks like a guy who owes drug money is going to be killed, or operating under a old address a family of four gets torched in their sleep?
