NIGEL Adkins is on the brink of being appointed Saints’ new manager, the Daily Echo understands.
Saints are understood to have approached Scunthorpe last night for permission to speak to the 45-year-old, which was granted.
And, while nothing has been formally confirmed as yet, the talks are thought to have moved on at pace since then.
The Daily Echo understands that Adkins, 45, has now moved into pole position for the job in the eyes of the club, as well as the bookies, who had this morning suspended betting on him after a raft of big money in the last few days.
Negotiations are thought to be underway this afternoon to complete all the necessary formalities, such as signing contracts and agreeing compensation with Championship side Scunthorpe.
While there is no indication exactly how long that will take - and a last minute hitch is not out of the question - it looks as if Adkins could be unveiled at St Mary’s very soon, as Saints prepare for Saturday’s trip to Swindon.
