Brighton MP calls for Parliamentary job-sharing

INCREDIBLY SENSIBLE: Caroline Lucas INCREDIBLY SENSIBLE: Caroline Lucas

MPs should be allowed to "job share", Brighton Pavilion MP leader Caroline Lucas said today.

Green Party leader Ms Lucas is to propose that pairs of candidates be allowed to stand for election and then share the job if elected, when she addresses her party's autumn conference in Birmingham later today.

She said the plan would allow MPs to retain stronger ties with their constituencies and could result in more women at Westminster.

"This is actually incredibly sensible," Ms Lucas told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"How many times have people talked about career politicians, about politicians being out of touch with reality.

"If you had job-sharing MPs what that would allow you do is to keep MPs with a foot in their community, they could keep their caring responsibilities, they could keep voluntary work, they could continue part-time in their profession.

"It would enable far more women to get into politics."

Ms Lucas said it was just the latest example of the Green Party being at the "cutting edge of new ideas".

The conference will be the party's first with an MP after Ms Lucas secured election in May.

And she said the Coalition presented the party with a chance to attract supporters.

"There is a real opportunity for the Green Party out there," Ms Lucas said.

"The context is grim, with the kinds of draconian cuts that the coalition Government are pushing through, but that does mean that anybody who had one scintilla of thought that the Lib Dems might be the party of fairness have now had that illusion completely shattered.

"And I think what we see now is a sense that there is a voice that is needed in politics that is standing up for genuine fairness."

Job getting a bit much for you is it Lucas? You take 182 days holiday from the House of Commons every year..

182 DAYS.....
36 Weeks and 4 Days More than enough to spend with your constituents and family I think

Enjoy it whilst you can..I see the Buffers ahead on your Pebble filled Horizon.

DEAR GOD! Brighton picked a couple of Doozies with this one and Mike W.

Ridiculous bit of attention-seeking headline-hunting.

How practical does she really think it would be? The two job-sharers would have to spend half their time each day filling each other in on what each other had done.

Either you want to be an MP or you don't. It's a cushy enough job at times. If you're finding you can't stand the heat, Caroline, get out of the kitchen

That's fine if the one salary covers both MPs doing the same job and not a huge salary and expenses for each.

Incredibly sensible, though she does say so herself.
Incredibly stupid I say.

What if they disagree on how to vote on something in parliament? Flip a coin?

Caroline Lucas seems to be spending her time as an MP coming up with stupid suggestions that will get her on the news.

So more part time MPs but presumably full time expenses? An MP should be a full time job. I usually imagine mPs as workign constantly, not ernough hours in the day and not enough sleep. Of course i know im wrong. MPs with second jobs or them popping up on chat shows etc shows me that they arent as dedicated as id like to think. I cannot see how an MP could possibly be part time. How can they just switch off after their 'shift'? The question is do they give us value for money? MPs with second jobs particularly rile me. How can they possibly have the time? Sorry but i want my politicians to do the job they are paid for, which is working for us. If you arent prepared to work tirelessly for us then move aside.

I take slight exception to the line about 'far more women into politics' if this is intended to mean it will see more women MPs. Id like to think people are chosen on their abilities, not on there gender. Call me naiive if you will but id hope that the reason is there are far more male MPs is because more men stand than women.

Like someone said, what happens when they disagree on a vote in parliament?
.
How are we supposed to be fully confident of their policies when voting the pair in??! It's very unlikely they will both share the same views on all issues even if they claim they do at election time.
.
A stupid idea from a waste of space politician who unfortunately represents my constituency.

Do people actually vote for candidates based on their gender then?
Does anybody actually give a hoot what the male/female ratio in the commons is?
Aren't there more serious matters to attend to?
The woman's clearly a crackpot with an agenda that's completely irrelevant to anything remotely important to her constituents.
Pity the fools that voted for her.

Unfortunately I do know of some women who voted for Lucas because she is, well a she.
They feel that a woman can represent them better than a man, not taking into account such small details like party manifestos.......ill
ogical and stupid and an embarrassment to womankind.

Is this for real, Brighton has a number of serious problems to deal with such as a serious social housing shortage, drug addiction, low wages with a lack of jobs, a teaching profession that has nearly as much time off as MPs with the problems that causes working parents, come on Caroline Lucas represent everybody and not just the usaul special groups and the middle class professionals, we do exist but only just.

This is a great idea. Job-sharing is now accepted for many many jobs and has mainly benefitted women. Why not MPs too. Maybe the people who think this is a bad idea think that Ms Lucas is so great they want 100% of her?!

I'm all for more women in parliament, but wouldn't this technique result in more individuals in place by default, since you'd effectively just be doubling the number of MP's in general? If that's the case, would we not see the same prejudices in place? Better to solve the problem than the symptoms. I'm not a green party supporter at all, but they've got their first MP in place which is a triumph; and already she want's to halve her workload.
