The country's first Green MP drove more than 900 miles to Italy for a holiday.

Caroline Lucas hired a 1.8 litre autogas powered car for her family trip.

Last night critics questioned why the Brighton Pavilion MP - who campaigns extensively on environmental issues - was not practicing what she preached.

But a Green Party spokesman said driving to her destination produced less pollution than if they had flown there.

Dr Lucas, who does not own a car, rarely flies and uses the train to get to work, was unavailable for comment yesterday.

She stated she reviewed her carbon footprint on a regular basis.
