Stabbed Brighton shopkeeper's fury as attackers are spared jail

A shopkeeper has spoken of his outrage after a teenage robber who stabbed him was spared jail.

Sayed Shah, who suffered nerve damage in his arm when the 15-year-old boy knifed him after stealing tobacco from his shop in March, said yesterday: “Justice has not been done.”

Mr Shah, known as Mo, chased the boy and a 13-year-old accomplice into a neighbouring street after the robbery at Preston Foods in Preston Drove, Brighton.

He received a two-inch knife wound in his arm but managed to keep the teenagers in Lucerne Road until police arrived.

The youth, now 16, was convicted of robbery and assault at Brighton Youth Court and received a three-year youth rehabilitation order, with a four-month curfew under an electronic tag. He was also ordered to pay £200 compensation and his father was given a 12-month parenting order.

The 13-year-old, now 14, was given a referral order and ordered to pay £50 costs after admitting robbery and assault in July.

This is why people now tend to take matters in to their own hands. Not the right thing to do but the only way you feel justice has been done.
Age shouldn't matter anymore, it's gotten too out of hand. Commit the crime, DO THE TIME!!!!!

Problem is...not enough coppers patrolling these areas with these little shops in. Both the kids involved, and their parents, deserve harsher punishments. Our 'woolly' judical system allows these little bleeders to get away with minmum punishment. I used to use the shop when I lived near it. Sayed is a good chap, and works very hard. All children need to be taught to respect their elders, as much as I was when I was their age, then crimes like this wouldn't happen. I'm getting quite nervous and worried of my kids either turning to crime, or being the victim of it. There is no easy answer, unfortunately.

You won't necessarily get prison even if you kill someone.
There are no places left in the prisons, and magistrates and judges have been told to not send people to prison if at all possible.
The government are trying to pretend that we need an alternative to locking people up, but that's only because they don't want to spend any money on building any new prisons - which is what we actually need for toe rags like this kid.
I'm not surprised the shopkeeper is angry. If it happens again I bet he'll be a little less bothered about how much force he uses when apprehending these scum.

A ridiculous outcome, he stabbed someone, prison, not a slap on the wrist!

A friend has a shop and was threatened at knifepoint by a gang of teens to hand over money. He told the police, identified the culprits and they were marched to his shop and made to apologise. That was it.

One's now serving 4 years in prison for another crime - one which could have been prevented if proper action had been taken in the first place.

180 odd years ago a juvenile could be hung just for petty pillfering never mind using a knife on someone. I'm not for a moment suggesting that's what this little sh** deserves but a good old public birching would probably do wonders for the confidence of hard working gentle souls who just want to go about their business without getting stabbed for sweets. Exactly what kind of up and coming generation are we breeding here and who is responsible?

I've said before on other forums, ZERO TOLERANCE IS WHAT IS NEEDED! I am heartily sick of reading about lenient punishments like this. If I had my way I'd sweep them into a pile and set fire to the lot of them. They are invariably from families where no one works nor has done for the kids whole life and they just breed more and more of the same. They grow up thinking that the world owes them a living, always ready to spout their rights without taking any of the responsibility that goes WITH those rights! We get what we deserve. We all sat back while the PC brigade stepped in and took all of OUR rights away and gave them to the 'poor under privileged' who deserve everything but earn nothing!

Yesterday some kids kicked my elderly neighbours' bin over. She told them off for being so rude and the most foul mouthed tirade of abuse came out of these 7 and 8 year olds' mouths who ran off giving the finger.
I gave chase and ran until I could smell the fear on their breath.
Then I dropped back and told them I would be waiting for them.
Now, this isn't how residents and older people should have to behave, but kids are out of control and their parents are pretty pathetic.
People are no longer tolerating these brats.

Take note of France. When things don't go their way (the majority of the working country) then they pretty much shut the place down with riots and strikes....
this is the only answer, our government rule with blinkers, but so did the french government until the people rose up.
direct action, its not pretty but the outcome in the end will be a better country to live in!

They got off lightly, and it's not fair.
But some of the comments here are a bit scary - birching, setting fire to them - and their parents, stocks! Well! And how many people commit murder and dont get a custodial sentence?

fascinator, when you see some of these kids in action, it's terrifying.
Although they look like kids, some of them are clearly very damaged and dangerous.
Children of 7 and 8 calling a lady in her 70s a cu** is atrocious. They too will probably be stabbing people in a few years time.

So where's the deterrant or message to others with that punishment? Drivers suffer larger fines for parking and recovery charges in this crazy country.

Understand where you're coming from but when you've had your car vandalized to the point of write off for telling kids to stop kicking a football for hours on end against your bedroom window when you are trying to sleep, (I'm disabled and live alone and spend a lot of time in my bedroom because of illness), you might understand where I'm coming from too. When you've been hospitalised with kidney failure after collapsing at home alone and the person you trusted with your debit card to do your shopping while you were ill, has plundered your account for the best part of £1,000 while you were in hospital, and only had to repay £200 and attend a money management course, you may appreciate how I feel. Justice in this country is a joke! I sympathise with this poor guy.

When I was a kid, only twenty years or so ago, there seemed to be far less of this sort of behaviour. My friends and I were either in the park playing football or in a bedroom playing old-school videogames. Sure, there were nasty little oiks around but they were a minority and we knew to steer clear of them.

These days it seems as though any kid could be a murderer waiting to happen.

If I can survive until next year I'll be happy as I'm off to someplace else, probably some place where law and order actually has some meaning.

Wow, the Daily Mail readers are out in force today.

Children are not tried as adults in most civilised societies. When children go wrong, it's considered a failure in the society that claims to be responsible. You can argue over who should be held accountable, but only an uneducated idiot blames the child.

I'm enjoying the "bring back hanging" comments. It's been proven to have no effect over and over again, but you're still shouting for it. Violence begets violence. Doesn't the idea of hurting people to stop them hurting people sound even a little bit stupid to you?

"but only an uneducated idiot blames the child." translates, literally, to: "only an idiot blames the perpetrator of a crime"

People like you are the reason little vagrants get away with things like this.

Another bleeding heart blaming society for the ill disciplined children of this country.
When children act like adults and commit heinous crimes they should be tried like an adult. If they are old enough to stab, mug and assault, they are old enough to take responsibility.

I was at school in the area 10 years ago and Mr Shah and his family were well known for dealing with unruly children using excessive force. Two incidents spring to mind one with a 13 year old girl and use of a taser (which was subsequently stolen and bought into school) and another where a hammer was thrown just missing a 14 year olds head. What goes around and all that.

Yeah, what goes around. Those kids were being unruly and got what they deserved.

Just because people want a decent, safe society, where it is unacceptable for children to stab other humans does not make them Daily Mail readers. It's a lazy, stereotypical phrase.
Decent people come from all sectors of the community with different political views and they read a variety of newspapers.
Unfortunately, anonymous coward, even us liberals are pushed to utter exasperation and possibly a need for revenge when they see 7 year olds call a 79-year old lady a cu**.
Perhaps with your chosen name you would prefer to shut your front door and not tackle the behaviour and pretend everything is ok. Well it's not and thank god decent humans are still willing to tackle the negative aspects of our society.

You miss the point. It's not society per se at fault, almost invariably it's the parents. Very often because they don't work in concert to discipline children, one parent often negates the other so they learn to play one off against the other and end up with no discipline whatsoever. If children have no boundaries, irrespective of who's fault it is, they need to be punished and the punishment should fit the crime. Treating them like naughty children when they have stabbed, beaten or done worse, only reinforces the message that they can do almost anything and get off virtually scot free. They even brag about it and openly challenge the police. A child's development is set in stone by the age of four or five and it is difficult to impossible to change their mind set after that. Of COURSE violence begets violence, but they have already learned that and once they have reached their teens that is how they will be for the rest of their lives save for a very few. So what do you suggest?

I was castigated for that very suggestion by someone I was dating. Never heard from her again. These women have very large families, claim all of the benefits that go with them and virtually leave them to fend for themselves. It's hardly surprising that they end up practically feral! All the money goes on drink and/or drugs and gambling and they often go begging to neighbours for food because there is nothing at home most of the time and when there is it's always processed food, nuggets and frozen chips etc. None of them cook nor know how to, nor indeed WANT to know. I speak from experience.
