Brighton to double the number of electric car charging points

A city's bid to drive down carbon emissions will be bolstered by a 100% increase in electric car charging points.

Brighton and Hove City Council want to double the number of charging points in the city, with four more being placed at strategic locations in the city.

Under the plans they will introduce two on-street electric vehicle charging points in Withdean Road, near to the entrance of the Withdean Sports Complex, and another two points in Madeira Drive opposite Terraces restaurant.

There are currently four charging points in the city - two in Bartholomews and two in Ditchling Road.

All of the charging points can be used by plug-in hybrid or electric cars, motorcycles and scooters.

It would be interesting to know the number of these electric vehicles in the city. Excluding invalid cars, I'll bet there aren't enough to warrant this expense.

Can be used: yes
Are used: erm no
Point in doubling availability: none

Never seen any of these points actually in use, just an empty lost parking space.

I think Ruth Lumley needs a new calculator.
A 50% increase is NOT the same as doubling them.

She should be charged! This is shocking! I am positive about this and the negativity shown is very draining on those who think this is a very current issue. When i read this I thought "Ohmns my god, what next!!" I think the puns here are enough, there are so many it hertz.

Thanks for spotting that - it's actually a 100% increase, and the copy has now been amended.

I drive past the points in Bartholmews almost daily. There is never anyone using them. Just two parking spaces going to waste.
Siting two more at Withdean Rd is hardly 'strategic' - unless they want to take up two parking spaces there to prevent normal cars from parking.
Cars powered by electricity is already old technology.
The future of urban motoring is cars powered by compressed air. Cheap, tax free and absolutely no pollution.
Watch this space.

As ever, I wonder who gets to gain from providing a 'service' that no-one uses...the cost per imaginary vehicle is huge!...Still, I'm sure those '4 wise people' on £125k a piece will be able to work out a way to cut this needless waste of money...lol

Never seen the two at Bartholemew's in use, never seen an electric car in Brighton for that matter. Good decision by whoever made it, give them a pay-rise...

How about telling us just how much these charging points are being used? Since the electricity is coming mainly from fossil fuels there is little point in them. If the council turned off all the outside lights left on during the day in its blocks of flats the city could do more for the envirmonent.

is it too much like hard work, but can the argus ask the council how many cars etc use the two points now town? surely the council should be making petrol stations have a point to charge the batterys? make it a planning requirement for new stations? waste of time and money, how many peole in brighton own a electric car? can the council prove these required or is it about being the "greenest council"

You people seem to resent any change to your pampered lifestyle's. Give the Electric car a little more faith....You will all have to go there in the end, or maybe you won't be able to come into the town if you are not a resident?
The constant pollution is getting worse by the week, and killing so many of our residents, that it must be stopped. Brighton is the only town I know that has an ongoing snake of motorist's shooting poisonous gasses into our lungs....Give anything that will stop the pollution a CHANCE~you know it makes sense?
